Are beach cleans worth it?

Beach clean ups is one way that you can help reduce the plastic pollution problem – and have some fun at the same time. Ocean currents are incredible and while some will spiral towards the centre of the Ocean, others will naturally brings plastic pollution onto shore, leading to rubbish on the beach.  This is a great opportunity to get stuck in and do what you can.

Do beach cleans make a difference?

In the grand scheme of things we are unlikely to pick up the 8 million tonnes of plastic waste that gets into our Ocean, but beach clean ups are a fantastic way to engage local communities and every little bit helps.

Beach clean-ups are can be an extremely important event to help mitigate the problems caused by Ocean debris and danger inflicted on marine life as a result of plastic pollution. Clean-ups also provide a great opportunity to gather important data about the state of our coasts and the types of rubbish entering our Ocean.

How do I get involved?

There is nothing wrong with just picking up plastic pollution when you see it if you are walking along the beach and we would encourage doing your own beach clean.  If you find a plastic bag, use that to collect other pieces.

You can also contact your local council. They can provide you with the information you need to put together your own litter pick event, whether that's on a beach, local park of town centre.

Beach Clean Up UK

Beach clean ups are becoming very popular in the UK. It is a great way to make a difference to the plastic pollution problem in our Ocean. Many business' are taking on beach cleans in the UK. We recently partnered with WILD and conducted a beach clean in Brighton together. You can read more about it here.

What else can I do?

Even though beach cleans are a valuable way to stop plastic reaching our Ocean, we at Ocean Generation want to stop plastic pollution reaching our Ocean and beaches at the source. Plastic never goes away, it just breaks down into smaller pieces. We need to change our relationship with plastic and start to make small behaviour changes.

You can follow this link to check out beach cleans near me.

A great way to do this is to stop purchasing pointless plastic. But what is pointless plastic? It's the sort of plastic that can easily be avoided. For example, single-use plastic products and purchasing plastic products that have non-plastic alternatives. Check out our blog on 20 actions to reduce and reuse plastic products
